Project to list known Error coins

By on 9th August 2018

It’s about time there was an attempt to list known UK decimal error coins. I need your help to point out coins that I may have missed or simply don’t know about yet.

Due to their random nature and the potential never ending task of listing and describing them all, I’m not really interested in…

I am very interested in listing the following:

See my Error coins, an Introduction post which lists many types of errors numbered from 1 to 27 , the kinds of things I’m most interested in listing are…

Well known die chips and distinctive cuds (some of no.1), partial collar errors (no.5A), broadstrikes (no.5B), known die clash errors (no.7), coins struck with a rotated die (no.17), doubled details but not die-wear related (some of no.18), mis-alligned centre pills (no.20), brockages and die caps (no.22), mules (no.24), off-centre strikes (no.25), wrong planchets including incorrect mono planchets for bi-metallic coins (no.26) and mixed denomination coins (no.27).

Info and good quality pictures are welcome to info@checkyourchange.co.uk

This table contains over 350 error coins. Some pictures are provided (all I have available for 1p – £2) on this page: Error Coins – Images.

Anomalies like that on the old £1 coins often indicate a forgery. I’d need to see it to make judgement.

    Good afternoon,

You have a few of my PCGS error coins here but not all of them. They have been listed on eBay from time to talk me which is where I assume you got the information as the PCGS no mbers matcch.

Regards on of my 20p you have listed (34511777) you state “may be the same as others”. The PCGS authentication ed and graded these 20p coins in the same consignment so if they say they are different and state the different countries they are from how is it that you state here they ‘may be the same as others’?

I have other errors of this nature graded by the PCGS if you want to take a look?

      Hello Glen,
It’s likely the details/images of those ones were saved at the time and passed to me by Steve – you probably know him from Facebook groups.

Your PCGS 20p 34511777 (20P021 on my list) is visually identical to other 2011 20p’s (20P022) I’ve seen and one that I own. I had my coin XRF tested and the result was 77% cu and 23% ni and obviously not magnetic. Solomon islands coins tend to be nickel plated steel in recent years. The PCGS label doesn’t mention an alloy or a weight and also specifies a ‘Solomon 20p’ planchet, and as they don’t use pence it cast doubt in my mind and in combination with the appearance and without specification of weight or alloy I cannot tell for sure if the coin is different to 20P022. Nevertheless, I included it on the list to share and perhaps we can get to the bottom of it. Updates are made frequently whenever I get new information.

Do you still have that coin in hand? It would be great if you could check if it’s magnetic through the slab with a strong magnet. There isn’t much we can do regarding weight or alloy, unless you noted the weight before it was slabbed?

And yes, I’d love to hear/see what else you have or have had.

      Thanks.

    Hi.
I have a 1998 NHS 50p coin with the diamond shapes from the reverse side appearing on the obverse side around the queens head. Is this worth anything?

I’m sending you an email with an attached PDF file listing my errors. The PDF has full photos with details of metal composition (Courtesy of Chards), dimensions and weight of my coins and details of Royal Mint Letters for some of them. Hope this is OK.

Thanks Mike, I’ll have a look at that. I do need to update my info with some new errors that have come to light/that I’ve been made aware of.

I have been through a large accumulation of 5p coins and detected a couple of issues relating to the 2017 5p coin. Firstly, I found that there were a significant number of coins struck slightly off centre (with the rim on one side being thicker or deeper than on the other). More significantly I have one 2017 coin where a significant amount of the text below the queens head on the obverse side has been ommited (Fid almost totally unstruck). I can supply photographs of this if required.

Yes please do. They sound like victims of the ‘normal’ Royal Mint quality control (or lack of it). The missing letters could be down to a grease filled die.

Could be a number of things. I’d need to see pictures and may also need an accurate weight too.

How to I add a photo for a major die clash of 1985 one pound coin – looks like a rotated die clash – I’m in USA – but my husband spent 10 years I the Navy and lived in several different countries for many years. He would always have to take a bunch of his American money and exchange it for the foreign currency to live/buy things while there. This was one of the many coins that he kept from those days
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi, I have a 1997 one pence
With quite a bit going on.
Looks like there are mixed metals and general tone is a little lighter with flecks of silver colour only on the very outer edge, both sides but the side edge is uniform in colour.
I had a thought it vould be manipulated but on analysing the heck out of it I can find no reasons to believe its not a genuine royal mint mistake on a mistake with a light mistake ju and a sprinkling of
    🤔🧐😮‍💨😑🤔 Hmmmm??
    It’s definitely an oddity.
    Many misprints too.
On the face side the dotted edge ends where the lettering ends on both sides of her man’s head. So there’s zero dotted edge around the top.
Queen seems to have a some features that are kinda off like sunken eye like a crack heads and slightly more prominent larger forhead. Crown doesn’t seem fully straight sitting and hair not right. Basically looks like Philip offered to fix it for her while half pissed.
No disrespect intended but there’s definitely print defects.
    Both sides

I’d have to see pictures of it. Also, an accurate weight is always a good idea to get for potential error coins.
