2000 £5 Crown

Two commemorative crowns were issued in 2000. The first was a millennium themed coin, dated 2000 (a identical version was also made, dated 1999). Another coin was issued in 2000 to mark the 100th birthday of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

Edge: WHAT’S PAST IS PROLOGUE.

Mintage for Circulation: 3,147,092 (total for both 2000 £5 coins. It would seem most were Type 8).

Collectability/Scarcity: 2: coin without Dome mintmark. 3: coin with Dome mintmark (for scale details see here)

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Jeffrey Matthews and shows a clock with its hands showing midnight, with it’s centre at London on a clock-face showing the British Isles. A special version of the coin with a small Dome mintmark (which is located to the right above the ANNO DOMINI) was sold at the Millennium Dome in a special package.

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is also by Ian Rank-Broadley and shows the Queen mother facing left with people celebrating behind her and the dates 1900-2000.
