Hi is a £5 coin worth anything? ?

Most of them tend to be £5. A bit more in perfect condition, and of course it depends which one.

    Got a Balliwick of Guersey coin from 1997 (50p), a 1926 and 1941 half penny & a 1995 Manx 2p.

I’ve got lots of other coins but I want to know if these are worth anything to collectors. Can’t seem to find references to them anywhere.

Yes, but probably not a huge amount. It’ll depend on the severity and condition.

I have a really odd 20p that doesn’t say a word of English and has some Asian symbol on it. My grandad told me it was worth £40 but I don’t know if it’s just an Asian coin that found its way over here and looks like a 20p. Do you know anything about it?

No idea. There certainly are foreign coins that are 20p shape but without seeing it I don’t know what it is.

It would need to be checked, initially weight and size and then probably metal composition to make sure it isn’t plated or stained. So it’s anyone’s guess.

I’ve got a 2013 Milner’s Tower (Isle of Man) 50p. Was wondering what it is worth. It appears to be in good condition aside from light scratches. But nothing extensive.

I don’t usually respond to valuation requests, as I’d be doing it all day long. This is a decimal coin site so a 10 shilling note is outside of the scope. (normally in used condition the 1960s ones are worth the 50p face value and not usually much more. In perfect condition, with a significant serial number or older ones can have more potential).

Thanks. They’re mostly a bit slow to be honest. When currency disappears most forget about them and the current trend is very much to collect the things you can find in change.

Hi i have seen on ebay 1p new penny coins 1971-1981 are been sold for £700 is this a rare coin or a fake sale as i have a few 1971 and up to 1981 1p new penny coins.

£700 asking prices (chancers often ask silly prices) or actually selling for that amount? All of the 1p and 2p coins from 1971 to 1981 were ‘NEW’ and all are very common. Any that appear to have sold are likely to be dodgy ebay practices like getting mates to bid or money laundering – in normal used condition they are just worth face value.

Hi thank’s for the reply, they are asking for that price on 1p new penny 1971 and says they have sold two, the seller is from England as of why i asked, some are selling for £49 but i did read on a few newspapers online that they are worth £50.

Newspapers just pick up on fake sales when they have nothing better to report, unless someone actually believed it and paid, but why would you? You just need to go down the shops and you’d probably get one of the millions of 1971 or other date normal NEW PENCE coins in your change.

Sealed in their original packs they aren’t worth a huge amount. I’m not sure if a ‘1st release’ slab will make much difference – perhaps it will to some buyer somewhere but generally slabbed coins aren’t really all that big business on this side of the pond, especially for something common and something non-circulated, as they should theoretically all be in excellent condition.

Hi I have some £100 coins are they legal tender and can they be banked?

    • CYC-Admin
      9th August 2018

They can’t unfortunately. They were a very dubious Royal Mint issue with a bullion value a lot lower than the face value written on them. All very well as long as everyone bought them and tucked them away in a drawer, but some didn’t and as soon as the RM started getting them back from banks expecting recompense (whose customers had paid them in at face value). The RM, knowing that loose scratched coins could no longer be re-sold and as the silver value is far lower than what it cost them to buy back, they released a memo to banks telling them to no longer accept them and basically moved the goalposts of the term ‘legal tender’. So they are literally not worth what is written on them! Second hand they usually sell for less than the fictional face value. If you bought them direct from the RM and have an order number I believe you can return them and will be fully refunded, but do check first.

For older coins like that it’s always condition that plays the most important role. There is the odd scarcer one but for most the value of those is quite low too, in normal used condition.

Do you have a section anywhere that lists the higher value coins such as £20, £50, £100? I know these are no longer produced, apart from the Welsh £20 coin, but I’d be interested to know what the full list is. I assume these ceased as they were not popular? A rare example of Royal Mint reducing their range output!

Not yet, probably due to my personal extreme dislike of them and how they were sold etc, but I suppose they should probably be added. They stopped them because they were caught out and they simply wouldn’t be able to sell them anymore, at least not in any great volume (apart from perhaps the £20 as they are ‘cheap’).

I can’t seem to get a clear answer to this… I found a ‘Dove of Peace’ £2 coin (1995) that I had forgotten in a drawer – in 1995. It’s been in the drawer all this time so remains in good condition. I checked on eBay and prices seem to range from £5 to £stupidmoney (£600). Is there a definitive answer?

    • CYC-Admin
      26th April 2019

Yes, it’s definitely very much at the lower end. People ask all kinds of silly prices on eBay and there is also the gold proof version (in a case with cert) which do genuinely sell for that kind of money. 99.999999% of them are just the normal brass version.

No, not really. Condition is everything and it normal used condition they are worth very little – it may be old, but it’s a mass produced product and there simply is very little demand for average old pennies.
