1990 £5 Crown

A commemorative crown was issued in 1990 to mark the 90th birthday of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. It was the first crown since 1981 and also the first with a face value of £5 instead of 25p.

The story behind the design:

The obverse has the portrait of the Queen by Ian Raphael Maklouf. The reverse is by Leslie Durbin and shows two letter ‘E’s flanked by a rose and thistle, royally crowned. The Queen mother was born in 1900 and married the future King George VI in 1923, never expecting to become Queen (her husband was not in direct line to the throne as he had an older brother – Edward VIII). She died aged 101 in 2002:
