Two commemorative crowns were issued in 2009. One to mark the 500th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King Henry VIII in 1509 and another with a big ‘3’ as part of the countdown to the London Olympics.

Commemorative £5 Coin, Type 20:

Obverse Type (bust design by Ian Rank-Broadley):

Reverse Type (design by John Bergdahl):

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse by John Bergdahl shows a standing, facing King Henry VIII. Henry was possibly not the nicest King ever, but he’s certainly one of the most well known!

Edge: Milled edge.

Mintage for Circulation: 184,921

Collectability/Scarcity: 1 (for scale details see here)

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Claire Aldridge and features a digital style ‘3’, the London 2012 logo and some other bits and pieces! I think the series of Olympic countdown Crowns are among my least favourite commemorative crowns.
