2002 £5 Crown

Two commemorative crowns were issued in 2002. The first was to mark the 50th anniversary of the accession to throne of the Queen (her father died in 1952, the official coronation was in 1953). A memorial coin was issued in 2002 in honour of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, who died that year.

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is also by Ian Rank-Broadley and depicts the younger Queen on horseback, very similar in style to the 1977 Jubilee crown.

The story behind the design:

The obverse shows the Ian Rank-Broadley bust of the Queen. The reverse is by Avril Vaughan and shows a smiling Queen Mother. Technically this coin is undated. The dates under the Queen Mother are the dates of her life. The actual date ‘2002’ doesn’t appear on either side and the denomination ‘FIVE POUNDS’ has been incorporated into the obverse for the first time.
